Chapter 4: The Prison

Main objective: Escape

You can see each enemy’s inventory by placing the cursor over his image on the map.
Note: You won’t be able to see inside the northernmost room on the map until you open the door

In order to go to the following optional chapter: All the civilians must escape.

• Items/Villages/Treasure:
Most of the objects in the chests are just weapons and items that Leaf and Rifis had before they were captured, except for a javelin, a Steel Sword, and a Rapier. The location of each item is randomly determined.

• New units:
- Brighton (axe knight), Machyua (sworfighter) and Lara (thief) join at the beginning of the chapter.
- Felgus (Free knight) and Karin (pegasus rider) join at the beginning of the chapter (in Leaf’s cell).
- Dalshien (axe armour). If you saved his son in the previous chapter, talk to him with Rifis or Leaf.

• Enemy reinforcements:
- Turn 7 to 20 (approximately): 1 Soldier from the left staircase.
- Turn 10 to 24 (approximately): 1 Soldier from the right staircase, and another soldier from the right side of the lower staircase.
- Turn 8 to 60 (approximately): 1 Soldier from the left side of the lower staircase.

• General Strategy:
- Max number of units you can bring: 7, plus 1 recruitable unit

This chapter and the next few are really complicated…to begin with, you don’t have any weapons and none of the units from the previous chapter are here, except Rifis. You start the chapter inside a prison cell with a new team, the Magi group; they are rebels helping the people of Manster. Among them is a thief who can make the chapter a little bit easier since she’ll be able to free everyone from their cells, and can also help them recover their items that are locked away in the chests. While you’re doing all of that, give one of Machyua’s swords to one of your unarmed units so he can fight.

By the way, the other people locked in the prison are villagers, and if you open their cells, they will try to escape (all the villagers must escape in order to access Chapter 4 Gaiden). The civilians will escape using the left and right staircases, and not the red arrows in the upper part of the map. There are also some imprisoned bandits who’ll help Rifis defeat the rest of the enemies in the chapter; don’t worry about what to do if they start attacking you because they won’t. Also, I recommend that you let Rifis or Karin gain a few levels because at this point they are the weakest members of your team.

If you thought that the soldiers in the hallway were the only enemies, well, they’re not – you haven’t seen anything yet. The reinforcements are the most difficult part of this map, since soldiers will continually appear at the stairs, but they do have vulneraries and weapons you can take from them. In fact, there’s enough of that stuff to fill up your inventory. If they bother you, though, you can block the stairs with one of your units, which will prevent them from appearing. And as I mentioned before, the civilians will escape using the same points that the enemy reinforcements use to enter the map, and the soldiers will try to capture the civilians, so be careful.
When they soldiers start appearing in smaller numbers, at most 2 units per turn, that is your chance to advance, free the prisoners, and open the big door at the north end of the map.

Inside, you’ll find a group of strong soldiers, so it would be a good idea to put a pair of swordfighters at the opening to shield the rest of your units, and use the Light Sword and Rapier to clear a path to the exit. When Dalshien gets near your units, speak to him with Leaf or Rifis and he will help you. The best approach is to get Rifis to open the door (but open it from the left to avoid the attacks of axe-wielding enemies). He should be able to avoid most of the enemies’ attacks (even though sometimes he doesn't, and dies… there’s some luck involved here).

The two arrows are your exit from the map. Make sure that all of your units escape before Leaf (this is important since if Leaf leaves first, all your other units will be left behind and captured). If all the villagers escaped, you will go to Chapter 4 Gaiden.
